DAMNATIO MEMORIAE

An Epic (and Musical) Quest for Truth

AUDITIONS WILL TAKE PLACE FEB 10th and 12th, FROM 6-9PM, AT THE HOLLYWOOD LUTHERAN CHURCH IN EAST HOLLYWOOD.

Damnatio Memoriae: a Latin phrase that means "condemnation of memory" and refers to the ancient Roman practice of formally erasing a person, typically a disgraced former leader, from historical and public records.  While the term is modern, the practice was common in Roman political life and has historical parallels in other cultures as well. 

The year is 2056 and the ruling fascist regime of America has systematically destroyed all records regarding U.S. history.  Meanwhile, a secretive and powerful think tank, The Parallax Institute, is literally rewriting American history with the intention of creating a new moral order for the world.  When a disparate group of social outcasts discover that the one remaining archive of human history is about to be forever erased, they join forces to literally save history.

Officially the 100th production of the Silver Lake Children’s Theatre Group, Damnatio Memoriae, is in many ways its perfect centenary project.  Taking cues and inspirations from Fahrenheit 451, 1984, Metropolis and Brave New World, the story centers on a desperate mission to save the intellectual heart of mankind through primal means.  Damnatio Memoriae will be an original musical featuring songs by various acts, including Manic Street Preachers, The Pixies, Pulp, Nine Inch Nails and The Silversun Pickups.  

 Written by Izzy & Willow Cooper and Broderick Miller, and directed by Broderick Miller, Damnatio Memoriae aims to be an epic humanist adventure that explores civilization’s need for truth and accountability. Auditions will take place February 10th and 12th, 2026.

HOW TO PREPARE

Auditioning actors will read sides from the play with fellow actors.  Actors who wish to sing should prepare to sing a song of their choice (no longer than 2 minutes, please), with or without playback provided by you.  Actors who wish to dance should prepare to perform a brief dance routine - please provide your own playback.  There are plenty of roles for non-singer/dancers, so don’t worry.
